Kelvin: "I am mortified by this photo. I remember this is from the re-takes photo session because I thought the first round was dreadful. If this was the lesser of two evils..... yikes."
"I started this crazy rumor that they were doing the King & I for my senior year. Mind you, I was one of maybe 6 Asian students in my entire town."
5 Things You Need To Know About this Video
1. The song is "On The Right Track" from Pippin. I watched the original version with Ben Vereen once a day for an entire year. I wanted nothing more than to be the Asian Ben Vereen. I actually still do.
2. The guy playing Pippin is Gary Ferrar and he remains one of my best friends today! We went away for a weekend to the Poconos, while in rehearsal for this show, and we choreographed this number and ran it ad nauseam.
3. I was tasked to buy jazz pants for the entire male cast members with my father at the instruction of our director. After a trip to the local dance store, I came back with several pairs of jazz pants and one very special pair for myself...... on my own accord, I decided that it was within the costume design for me to wear the only pair of black skin tight velour jazz pants. They were a necessity.
4. I would estimate that I was at the height of my weight gain in this production. Somewhere around 278lbs. My pre-show diet consisted of 2 pizza slices, fresh baked cookies from our fundraisers, and a blue Powerade. Some things never change.
5. If you watch only ten seconds of this video it has be the last 10 (@ 3:40). It's just hilarious. The most graceless flip into a falsetto followed by the largest prep for THE slowest single pirouette and then!!!...... A 278 pound cooter slam. Yes, you heard right.
Kelvin Moon Loh is currently in the ensemble of the 1st National Tour of American Idiot. "Cooter Slamming" is no longer a part of his special skills.
